San Antonio Chapter 99s
September 2009

NEXT CHAPTER EVENT: SEPTEMBER 19, 2009 Summer Social at Sherry Walker's home. Plan to arrive around 11:00 AM and we'll eat around noon. As their was no August meeting and since it has worked well in the past, the officers made the decision on the BBQ dinner, which will be catered by Bill Miller's. Traditionally people coming have brought an appetizer or a dessert, but it has always turned out to be too much food, so when you RSVP, if you are so inclined, ask if anything is needed. The cost will be $7 per person. (Please bring a check or the correct cash, so Sherry will not have to be concerned about making change.) Coffee and tea will be provided, but if you like, feel free to bring your alcoholic beverages. Call Sherry at 830-336-3653 or email her at sdw519@gvtc.com by SEPTEMBER 16, PLEASE. Bring your other-half, family and friends. Everyone invited.

Directions: If coming from IH 10: Take FM 3351 (Ralph Fair Road) going north. Go 8.3 miles to Silver Hills. Turn right. Go 0.9 mile. The street makes a jog a block after coming in the subdivision, but stay straight. Sherry's house is on the right just before the road curves. The number 2060 is on the mailbox.

If coming from Hwy 281: Take Hwy 46 west. As you approach Bergheim, there is a traffic light at 46 and 3351. Turn left on FM 3351. Silver Hills is 3.5 miles on the left. Turn left for 0.9 mile to Sherry's.

AOPA AIR SAFETY FOUNDATION will be presenting "What Went Wrong", looking at the causes of aircraft accidents, September 23 7:00-9:00 PM located in the Doubletree Hotel, 37 NE Loop 410, San Antonio 78216 (at San Pedro). Sherry tells me we will have to pay for parking at the Doubletree. This looks like another of their don't-want-to-miss seminars.

For our October 10th activity, we plan to meet with EAA Chapter 958. Their program will be Carol Ann Garrett's presentation of her and Carol Foy's round-the-world flight. She will be selling books and DVDs to raise money for ALS. Time and place and other details later.

In November, we plan to reschedule the "know your plane and what if" with A&P Shaun Maycock and CFI Cheryl Casillas. Please try to attend this informative presentation and invite others who might be interested. Details later.

Denise Pride (and sometimes, Reni) has been busy flying dogs for the Pilots N Paws organization - sometimes two legs in one weekend. Very rewarding. Most of these animals are due for euthanasia, so are rescued and found a home. Sometimes "home" is a long way away. Maybe someday, she will give us a presentation about this activity and her experiences. If you think you might be interested, give her a call at 210-445-3485 or email denisepride@sbcglobal.net. She can point you in the right direction. PnP is shooting for 5000 animals to be transported during the week of September 12. I'll bet they can use all the help they can get. You only need to fly one leg. Sometimes these animals are transported all the way across the country Ð takes lots of dedicated pilots with, or access to, planes.

Although not a 99s function, a group of 99s had a great time at Sherry's hangar party, where she, Cubbie and Becky celebrated completing the Air Race Classic. Their co-pilots were not able to attend. We were having so much fun, we didn't realize it was so late, so the last of the die-hards started breaking up around midnight. Thanks, Sherry.
