San Antonio Chapter 99s
October 2005

Is it October already!!!???

Our next meeting is October 8 at 11:00 AM at Boerne Stage Airfield in Sherry Walker's hangar. We had lots of leftovers from the picnic, so we will have lunch there after the meeting. Notice the time is later than we normally meet, but for those who fly in, 11 AM works better (and for those who like to sleep in on Saturday). We'll address upcoming activities and fund raising.

We want to thank Sherry Walker for hosting the picnic - we all had a great time. And we were thrilled to meet our new member, Arpinder Kaur, who just transferred from the Kansas Chapter and her husband, Pritpal. Arpinder is a flight instructor at Wright Flyers and we were amazed at how short a time she took to get her certifications and ratings. She has promised to send a bio soon. (Her address and phone numbers were in September Newsletter.)

Elm Creek Airpark is having their annual fly-in on November 5 from 10 AM to 5 PM. Elm Creek is 4 miles SSW of Seguin. More information at http://www.airnav.com/airport/0TX6

Itr's a while away, but you might want to consider attending the Gulf Coast Wings Weekend 2006 April 29 and 30, 2006. The event will include over 75 hours of Wings Safety Seminars, an IA Course, CFI Refresher Course and Flying Companion Course. I'm sure Galveston will be ready for us by then.

Possible Chapter events might include: Poker Run (Laura Richter), Safety Seminar (Gloria Blank, Sherry Walker, Reni Moczygemba), Altitude Chamber (Patty Taylor), and Pinch Hitter's Course (Alice Foeh). Contact these ladies if you would like to help in any of these areas.

A reminder - if you haven't paid your Chapter dues for 2005-2006 (due June 1st), please send your check to Sherry Walker or bring to the meeting. Dues are $12 a year, prorated at $1 a month for new members. It is strictly voluntary, but if you add an additional $2 a year, it will be sent to the Section to offset the cost of the "Approach". This is our source of income for Chapter expenses. Generally, any monies generated from fund raising is allocated to the Scholarships.

There is a very interesting article in the August issue of the Cessna Owners Association's magazine about Neta Snook. Among her "firsts" were: she was the first woman instructor to graduate from the Curtiss School of Aviation; she took the Kinner Airster for its first test flight (the one that Amelia Earhart later bought); she was the first woman to operate a commercial aviation field; and she was Amelia's first flight instructor. Neta stayed close to aviation, but gave up flying in August 1922 when her son was born and didn't fly again until 1977 and then it was as a passenger on a commercial flight. There is a picture of Neta at age 84, as she "emerges from a Flight Simulator at NASA's Ames Research Center". ~ Cessna Owner Magazine article by Floyd Allen and Terry Western

One of Amelia's last messages to her husband (during her fateful flight) was: "Please know I am quite aware of the hazards . . . I want to do it because I want to do it. Women must try to do things as men have tried. When they fail, their failure must be but a challenge to others."

Once again . . . now I grovel . . . please send me your bio!! Margaret started this in 1988, and I am using these few and trying to update. But we, by no means, have everybody's. And most of our present members were not in our Chapter then. Isn't it fun learning about your sister aviatrixes?

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to: Ginny McDaniel (Oct 3) and Pam Crane Oct 24)!!

99s ANNIVERSARIES: Jo Agee-Housler (17 years), Ginny McDaniel (16), Mary Rohrer (2). Thank you for your continued support!!

A special tribute to these ladies for their thirty-plus years as a 99: Pam Crane, Alice Foeh, Elizabeth Jordan, Laura Richter, Ruth Nichols, Evelyn Sizemore.

"Once you have flown, you will walk the earth with your eyes skyward, for there you have been, there you long to return". ~ Leonardo de Vinci

See you at the October meeting!

ABOUT OUR MEMBERS

JO AGEE-HOUSLER

We met Jo during one of our FAA Safety Seminars in 1986 and she joined the 99s in March 1988. Jo and Conrad had recently married and Conrad was a student pilot. Since then, Conrad has become one of our most ardent supporters - he has become our Chapter photographer and was initiated as a 49 1/2. He has earned the Chapter's 49 1/2 of the Year award five times.

The Agees came to San Antonio in the military and retired here. Jo had enjoyed flying with her first husband, but it wasnr't until she couldn't sell their Piper Comanche after his death that she started flying lessons in March 1985 at Khardy's Airport where she kept N#4681P

When Jo was a fairly new private pilot, her exciting trip was a solo flight to Lajitas - way down in the Big Bend Country. She also made long flights to Ardmore, Oklahoma, Waukesha, Wisconsin and Lansing, Michigan - - no puddle jumping for her!

Jo served the Chapter as Treasurer for many years, then Vice Chair. She attends Section Meetings and has won the "99 of the Year" twice. Jo is a very active and willing member and has participated in all the activities the chapter has sponsored since she joined.

She is now retired from the school system, where she was a counselor at Clements High School. She has four children and only one of them, a son, is a pilot. He has, on occasions, had 81 Papa with him in Mississippi.

LENA CRONK

Lena started flying in 1977 when a friend, who was a pilot, introduced her to the exciting world of aviation. She has flown the Cessna 152 and 172 with McKee Aviation (on SAT airport). When she earned her license, she became involved with other pilots. Lena was president of WNAA (Women's National Aeronautical Association; Vice-President of the South Texas Pilots Association and a member of the Texas Pilots Association.

Lena won third place in the Sky Lady Derby - twice! In April 1988, she jazzercised to raise funds for the Leukemia Foundation. And . . . she is choir director at her church.

Lena has two sons, Christopher and Valentine, and she is also a grandmother. She is now retired from nursing.

Lena serves the San Antonio Chapter as Airmarking Chairman, served as Vice Chair and two terms as Chairman and has received the Chapter's "99 of the Year" award 5 times! Lena got proficient at managing the Coke Booth at fly-ins to raise funds. She is very active in the Chapter and attends International Conferences and Section Meetings.
