San Antonio Chapter 99s
November 2008

There was no regular scheduled meeting in October, so a few members wandered over to Kerrville for the new EAA/TXAA Fly-In on Saturday, October 11th. Apparently, the EAA has discontinued their SWRFI activity. This was done on a much smaller scale - BBQ on a bun lunch, some raffles and hangar-flying. The weather wouldnÕt cooperate enough for the Boerne bunch to fly over, but those who drove were: Jo, Sherry, Reni, Denise and Gloria. Nancy drove from Leakey and Becky Smith flew in later that afternoon.

Next meeting - November 8, 10 AM. Alamo Cafe at 14250 Hwy 281 North in the upstairs area. They open at 10:45, but will let us come in at 10:00 for our meeting. Alice Foeh and Patty Taylor have been working on the final 50th Anniversary celebration, including seeing for the first time the bio tapes of Ann Ash and Ginny McDaniel. This is very special. Do try to attend. Family and friends are invited also.

When I forwarded an email (from Denise) to Patty about the Youth Aviation Adventure Boy and Girl Scout program, she emailed me the following and I share this information with you.

"This is being done in San Antonio by Ed Benson. He has two sanctioned Girl Scout Aviation days through the San Antonio Council. I have been going as the 99s representative for the past 3 1/2 years. The last one was October 4th and is usually held at Nayak Aviation. Sherry has been with me on an occasion. I am the final act, so to speak. The girls are there from 8 AM until noon, or until the last girl gets her flight. I am asked to come to represent the 99s, speak of general aviation and air racing and specifically to "bleed green" as Ed calls it - speak of how my 35+ years of girl scouting helps me achieve my goals and congratulate all the girls for being scouts and seeking their own adventures. It has been wonderful the be a part of it. The next one will be held March 21st."

"It is interesting that you are passing this along at this time as I was plannon talking to you guys about Ed at the next neeting to potentially nominate him for one of the non 99 awards given at the convention. Ed has done so very much in our community for general aviation and scouting - both boy and girl scouts. He is a terrific person, and I will give you more information about him at our November meeting. Cheers - Patty"

Our Christmas Party is December 6th. It will be hosted by Denise Pride. Plan to arrive about 5:00 PM - we decided on early so you can find her house before dark, although it's not that hard to find. [Note - The address and phone number has been removed from the copy that is displayed on our web site. You can find the address, phone number and directions in our members only section.] It was decided to buy the turkey dinner and will probably run about $8-$9 a person. You may pay when you arrive. You will need to RSVP to Sherry Walker with the number of people who are coming with you. If you would like to bring hors d'oeuvres or dessert please do so. It is just the main meal that we are buying. Water, tea, and coffee will be provided. Bring your own alcoholic beverage. Contact Sherry at 830-336-3653 or sdw519@gvtc.com And . . . VERY IMPORTANT . . . each person bring a gift (around $15) for our exchange game!

Directions to Denise's - see members only section.

CONTRATULATIONS TO BECKY SMITH. She recently earned her Private Pilot License!!! We are so thrilled for you, Becky. We can still remember how it feels! Many happy hours of flying are ahead of you.

A reminder - We have an Internet auction going on for a Lowrance GPS - just go to our website and follow directions. www.sanantonio99s.org This GPS can be used for air, land and sea. You could really get a bargain and make money for the chapter!

Since there was no regular meeting and no business conducted, there are no minutes for October.

Nancy says, if you are interested in Ruth Anne's fruit cakes, let Nancy know and she will bring them to the November meeting and save you the postage. 830-232-4257 or email captgramma@yahoo.com

GOOD AND NOT-SO-GOOD ADVENTURES

Sometimes we need to let off some steam - or better still to praise the considerate pilot. Examples:

The good - when a Cessna 172 extends the downwind so the faster plane can come in and land. He was probably parked and in having coffee by the time the Cessna landed.

The not so good - being cut off on final by a lower, not-on-the-radio pilot. On the ground, pilots standing and chatting in front of the gas pumps while you are waiting for them. Cars on the taxi ways forgetting this is an AIRPORT. Gliders setting on the runway, or landing when you are on the runway.

For considerate practices and for safety, what to do and what not to do, please send me your stories to share.
