San Antonio Chapter 99s
November 2007

Finally, the poker run is over. We had a decent turnout, and a lot of fun. Sherry said we profited $131. By now, everyone has heard about the accident at Boerne Stage Airport, which started out the day too eventful. Everyone involved in the plane/car runway incursion are okay and on the road to recovery. A big "thank you" to all who participated in the poker run: Stella and Ray Leis, Jo Agee-Housler, Laura Richter, Cheryl Casillas, Alice Foeh, Winnie Clements, Kay Renfrow, Sherry Walker, Patty Taylor, Reni Moczygemba and our newest member, Rebecca Smith. Patty and Sherry gave a very interesting presentation of their learning experience in the latest Air Race adventure.

One of the participants in the poker run (who incidentally won 1st place) flew in a helicopter. When Reni met him at Boerne Stage, she asked if he wanted company flying to New Braunfels. Much to her delight, he did. Wow! Was she on cloud ninety-nine!

"Who we are and what we do has little measurement by profits. There are a group of women called the San Antonio Chapter Ninety-Nines who would be little more than an organization of strangers if we didn't go out and involve ourselves in the world. I would know your name, and a little about each one, but without an occasional rolling up of the sleeves and jumping right in for a cause would any of us know each other's true grit. Accomplishment comes with sweat, love and patience. We accomplished so much! Fellowship, safety, mentorship." ~ Patty Taylor

Kay Renfrow has done a great job of setting up our next meeting program. So be sure to put this on your calendar. November 10th, at 10:00 AM at Stinson Airfield in the conference room at the tower. Lunch afterwards at the Patio Café (also in the terminal building). Please RSVP to Kay by November 7th if you plan to stay for lunch so the café will have an idea of the size of our group. Home: 830-420-3578 E-mail: ifly76c@highspeedtexas.com Our guest will be Capt. Kyle Goldstein, Randolph Flying Safety Officer. He will be speaking on mid-air collisions and avoidance, focusing on the MOAs and restricted areas surrounding San Antonio. This should not be missed!

CONGRATULATIONS to Denise Pride and Kay Renfrow. Denise passed her check ride Sunday, Oct 14. and Kay the latter part of August. Now that Denise and Kay have passed theirs, we will be rooting for Reni and Terry and Rebecca. These gals are all getting very close to their check rides.

San Antonio Pilots Association Safety Meeting - November 7th, 7:00 PM at Hallmark Inst.

The following was published in the FAA's "Safety Highlights", an e-newsletter sent to every FAA employee: Kevin Clover, National FAA Safety Team (FAASTeam) Manager, reports that the Ninety-Nines, Inc., the world's oldest organization for women pilots, signed a Letter of Understanding with the FAA making it the first National Industry Member of the FAA Safety Team. Chapters and members across the U.S. will assist the FAASTeam in sanctioned events, promote events in its publications, contribute to the FAASTeam website and generally support the safety program. The Ninety-Nines President Patricia H. Prentiss noted the organization's long history of promoting aviation safety and education. She said the 99s has a long relationship with the FAA. This agreement allows us to continue that relationship and helps fulfill one of our mission objectives, to provide aviation education in the community.

Anyone see the article in the Express-News business section on October 22nd? Other than the poop the airlines put out, pretty good article. An excerpt: "Flying smaller planes . . . . . . . . . has become so popular that it has begun to contribute to the nation's air traffic and congestion."

Very good article in AOPA's e-Pilot on carburetor icing - a student pilot was seriously injured when he made a night forced landing due to engine failure, caused by carburetor icing. Bottom line - from AOPA ASF "Aircraft Icing Safety Advisor": At the first indication of carburetor ice, apply full carburetor heat and LEAVE IT ON. The engine may run rougher as the ice melts and goes through it, but it will smooth out again.

Marsha Copeland has a new e-mail address. It is: marsha_copeland@yahoo.com (The blank space is an underscore.)

Sad notice: Marty's husband, Tex Goppert, passed to New Horizons after a long battle with cancer. The service was held Saturday, Oct. 20th. Our love and prayers go to her and her family at this grievous time.

Kicking off our San Antonio Chapter 99s 50th year Celebration, a segment on women pilots and the SAT Chapter will be aired November 19, 2007 on Texas Public radio (89.1 FM). I'm told more advertising will be forthcoming. Thank you, Reni, for arranging this.

By request, the birthdays and 99s anniversaries of the month will resume being published in the newsletter.

November birthdays: 19th - Betty Sue Basham

99s Anniversaries in November: Faye Makarsky (18 years), Marcia Weser (17), Marsha Copeland (11), Carol Levine (8), Patty Taylor (5), Shannon Fallis (3)

SEE YOU NOVEMBER 10TH AT THE MEETING AND DECEMBER 7TH AT THE CHRISTMAS PARTY!!!

                                                                                                                                            ~ Gloria

The Christmas Party . . .

The Christmas Party this year will be at Lackland AFB in the officers club. It will be on Friday night, December 7th , starting at 6:00 p.m.; dinner will be served at 7:00.

We have two menu choices for dinner as well as a vegetarian lasagna. All the dinners are served with freshly baked rolls and butter, apple cobbler with whipped cream, and coffee and/or tea. Besides vegetarian lasagna, the two entrées are:

Beef Medallions with Béarnaise sauce, served with lightly tossed Caesar salad, duchess creamed potatoes, and Italian green beans with baby carrots.

or

Grilled chicken breast and three Hawaiian style jumbo shrimp, served with tossed green salad, rice pilaf, and green bean amandine.

The price of either the beef medallions or the grilled chicken and jumbo shrimp will be $23.00, and that includes the gratuity/service charge. The price of the vegetarian lasagna will be $15.00 including the gratuity/service charge.

We will not be able to buy wine by the glass that night, but will be able to buy house wine by the large carafe. Each large carafe of wine will serve eight people, and that comes out to be $1.65 per glass including gratuity/service charge. (Such a bargain!)

Sherry Walker will be taking reservations and food orders for this banquet and writing one big check at the end of the affair. When you decide on your entree, also decide whether you will be drinking a glass of wine or two, and if it will be red or white. Sherry must place an order for the carafes of wine also. Everyone who will be drinking some wine please add $1.65 per glass to their food selection. We must have our final head count and food and wine order in by Dec. 1st.

You may RSVP to Sherry via email, sdw519@gvtc.com or telephone, 830-336-3653, and you may mail her a check before the banquet or pay her by check or cash the night of the banquet.

This will be the first time that the Christmas Party will be on a Friday night, and we are anxious to know how this works out for people.

DIRECTIONS to the Lackland Gateway Club: 1650 Kenly Ave, Bldg. 2490: Take Hwy 90 West to Military Drive. Exit Military Drive. Turn right (south) - stay in middle lane. Pass the 1st gate (it goes to the hospital). Move to the left lane and turn left in the next gate, which is Luke Blvd. Drive straight ahead. On the right, you will pass a huge field with dozens of old aircraft parked there (kind of an outdoor museum). Drive to the first intersection, Kenly Ave. Look across the street to the right - the very large building is the club. Turn right. Turn left into one of the entrances to the club. There are about four little streets. Park anywhere.

Stella will have maps available at the November 10th meeting. If you need a map and cannot attend the meeting, please call Stella and she will mail one to you.
