San Antonio Chapter 99s
March 2006

We had a great time visiting in the tower at Stinson Airfield and watching the planes come in on a very bumpy, windy day and a few of us were glad it wasn't us! We had a short meeting during lunch in the airport coffee shop. Winnie could not attend the meeting. I took a few notes: Attending the February 11, 2006 chapter meeting were: Ann Auld, Cheryl Casillas, Reni Moczygemba, Jo Agee-Housler, Kay Renfrow, Nancy Aldrich, Gloria Blank, Laura Richter and Patty Taylor.

Those planning to attend the Section Meeting in Wichita, KS are Laura Richter and Jo Agee-Housler.

Nancy is strongly urging our chapter to get involved in aviation education in the community.

Cheryl said some of the airports are out of 99s brochures; Gloria will order more from Headquarters. (Note: Out of them, redesigning. Will be a few months.)

Patty Taylor is seeking a speaker for the Chapter Awards Banquet in June. Shannon Walker or Wiede Cutshall have been suggested. Wiede is the lady who spoke at the Zonta dinner in January. We all know Shannon who is a brand new astronaut.

Nancy appointed chapter Scholarship Committee: Laura Richter, Sherry Walker and Gloria Blank.

Ann Auld is hosting an EAA Young Eagles Rally in Leakey (Real County Airport) April 29. She was hoping to have 99s pilots and planes to help. EAA and the 99s no longer have an agreement, so Nancy is checking on how we can help in this event.

Sherry Walker was out of town, but sent in her Treasurer's Report with Gloria: Balance 1-1-2006 $993.81. Disbursement for flowers $119.08. Balance 2-11-2006 $874.

Thought I would share this e-mail I received from my granddaughter, Angel Duncan, MA,MFTI,ATR, who went to San Francisco to earn her Masters Degree and is now working there as Support Group Coordinator with the Alzheimer¹s Association and Director of Memories in the Making of 53 facilities in the West Bay Area. ~ Gloria

"The Hyatt Classic Residence is a very elaborate assisted living facility and also has a memory and skilled nursing facility. Wednesday (Feb. 22nd) I was invited to attend an awards ceremony honoring those who served in aviation. There were about six people honored- two who were prominent key figures during WWII. I think his name was Mr. Goldstein, he wrote five books on aviation and was an established professor (and doctor) of medicine at Stanford. Mr. Hiller was another key figure who was featured in ( I think it was) Time magazine. Another was a pilot for Pan AM who flew cargo and passengers over during WWII. Two other gentlemen were pilots who trained others to fly and were also parachuters "jumpers"- Out of all the honorees only one was a woman. I don't remember her name, but she is now in her 90s and was a 99. They read a poem regarding Amelia Earhart and spoke of how she was the first president of the 99s, and the honor it is to be in this organization. They said there were only about 5500 women (in the USA) who are in the 99s and how small that number is, but how tremendous it is to be a 99. The woman who was being honored for her service was in the 99s back in the 40's. I told her afterwards that my grandmother is a 99 and her face just lit up- she thanked me for telling her that and said how special that was.

It was a really awesome evening- I do art therapy (Memories in the Making) with two of the gentlemen at the Hyatt that were honored and it was so special to see them beaming as they held their awards - the pride in their eyes. . . really cool. I wanted to share with you- I just thought it was a great event to honor these people for their service in aviation and how it reflected what you do. "
